J*zz Adjacent now bi-monthly, recommendations and more gigs
This has been sitting in my drafts for a while
Hey there…
Hello to all of the new subscribers and paid subscribers!
(Hi mom)
Thank you for supporting this archival music journey. I am grateful for you tuning in.
First off my monthly show on East Village Radio is now bi-monthly!
From now on, I will be broadcasting from the historic 1st Ave. booth in NYC every first & third Mondays of each month. I started J*zz Adjacent almost a year ago now on the advice of the brilliant DJ and producer Sophie Callis and I do not regret it.
Next one is October 21st.

This one starts off a bit messy. Flying back from some gigs in Paris, London and Copenhagen, I landed at JFK and took the train straight to the station. My head was still a little in the clouds.
While in Copenhagen I stumbled upon the vinyl store Accord and found a perfectly conserved Patrice Rushen album! I needed to celebrate Patrice Rushen’s 70th. She is a goddess, musical architect in my book.So many women in music are not held up as high as their male counter parts and it really pisses me off, but this is why I do what i do. Just trying to adjust and widen the vision of how the story of this music of ours is told.
Also shared the music of our dearly departed, guitarist composer bandleader and vocalist Russell Malone. He will be missed. Check out this gorgeous solo performance of the Bee Gees “How deep is your love” from 2004.
A bunch of new music from Jontavious Willis, Demae, Dominic J Marshall, Theo Croker, Tamil Rogeon, Nappy Nina, George Burton, Phoelix, Malaya and a bonus conversation with an 8yo named Frank who came through to tell us about the two animations he is working on his search for other humans under 12 yo who would be interested in doing voiceovers.
(And Frank is VERY serious about this.)

Gotta admit I didn’t even send this mix out to y’all and I don’t know why cause, I mean look at that playlist!
(I struggle with being consistent. I am working on it. Just saying it out loud for anyone who is like me)
Go to my Mixcloud page and give a lady a follow and a share.

Make Jazz Trill Again | Melanie Charles & Yunie Mojica Podcast
These wonderful multi instrumentalist and Women in Jazz decided to sit down and create a community and have necessary unfiltered conversations about this thing called Jazz. They say that this Black American Music, well, “It’s for the streets” and I agree!
“… it’s for the people and it’s to dance to. It’s anti-institutional. Jazz and Black Music was birthed in the streets and we can’t forget that.”
If you don’t know Melanie Charles’ work as a vocalist, flautist, and producer I suggest you start off with this gem.
Pump up the volume trust me.
Yunie Mojica is a Saxophonist, producer and GRAMMY nominated composer, check out her work with the jazztronica outfit Sonic Messengers.
Check out this 6h DJ + live instrument & vocals (yes you read that right… 6h!) set they did at one of my favorite Brooklyn venues Public records.
Jazz Re:Freshed | Dope Jazz Radio
By now anyone who has met me knows how much love I have for Jazz Re:Freshed and all that they do and have been doing for over 20 years. They are a huge component of the new wave UK scene. And have expanded worldwide (they have their own stage at SXSW and are doing the Outernational Event in Korea this year.)

I will be heading to Norway, Portugal, Poland and Italy in a few weeks. You can find all my concerts here.
Just was in Copenhagen for the first time! It was very emotional. But more on that another time…
Hope your family & loved ones are doing well…
